A New University Hospital

The New University Hospital in Aarhus is the largest hospital project in the history of Denmark and as of 2011 the biggest building project in Northern Europe. Once built the hospital will be the largest workplace in Aarhus, attaining the size of a typical Danish provincial town.

The New University Hospital will be built in extension of the existing Aarhus University Hospital, Skejby in order to create a joint hospital complex.

The large hospital complex will be organised as a city of districts, streets, plazas and squares. The goal is to create a green, diverse and vibrant city. The hospital is also designed to meet the future demands of technology, treatments and ways of working.

The New University Hospital in Aarhus will:

  • be fully completed in 2019
  • treat about 100,000 hospitalised patients annually
  • receive around 900,000 patients for outpatient treatments annually
  • become a workplace for around 9,000 employees
  • accommodate around 1,000 students
  • receive 35,000 daily transports
  • consist of 223,000 square metres of new buildings
  • integrate the existing 157,000 square metres of Aarhus University Hospital, Skejby
  • account for 40-50 percent of all treatment in the region of Central Jutland
